Eight of the Best Cat Songs Ever

Cats and kittens have been our muses (NOT mouses – that’s not even grammatically correct!) or sources of inspiration down through the centuries. We’ve drawn pictures of them, made sculptures of our adorable furry friends, and written countless books about cats, extolling all their charms. Is it any wonder that humans have written many songs about cats (or cat related)? Without further ado, here’s a list of eight of the best songs ever written about cats!

Let the cat themed music begin!

1. What’s New, Pussycat?

Purists among you (and Purrists, as well) might say that this 1965 song, written by Burt Bacharach and sung so beautifully by Tom Jones, is talking about another kind of cat. I beg to differ. Kitties all over the world love this song, and like to snuggle every time it’s played!

2. The Siamese Cat Song

Peggy Lee had an enormous hit in 1955 with Disney’s Siamese Cat Song from Lady and the Tramp. “We are Siamese if you please – We are Siamese if you don’t please” became a blockbuster hit, and changed forever the way a generation of kids would look at their beloved furry friends!

3. Pussycat Meow

Deee-lite had a smash hit in 1992 with the unforgettable “Pussycat Meow” extended mix. Cats all over the world are totally familiar with the lyrics of this song – well, naturally, since they and their owners re-enact it every day! “Here kitty kitty kitty / Meow – Meow / Pussycat – Pussycat – Pussycat – Pussycat / No no no / Kiss me you fool”.

4. Everybody Wants to Be a Cat

Who can forget SCATman Carothers (and others) singing “Everybody Wants to Be a Cat” in Disney’s cat-a-licious cartoon film “The Aristocrats”? This song originally appeared in 1970 in the original “Aristocrats” animated movie, but has since had nine lives of its own in countless other album compilations.

5. The Cat Crept In

Remember when the cat crept in? We’re not sure it was the very next day. Much better to ask Mud, who rose to the top of the charts with this  catty masterpiece in November 1974.

6. Mean Eyed Cat

OK, granted, Johnny Cash was probably talking about a whole ‘nother species when he first recorded “Mean Eyed Cat” in 1955 and had a monster hit with this song when it was released in September 1960. But admit it – Haven’t YOU ever known a real life mean-eyed cat?

7. The Cat Food Song

This song hasn’t had the fame that previous entries has, but it really touches on what’s closest to a kitty’s heart! It was written and recorded by Robin Radus in 2011. There’s even Japanese lyrics for this wonderful tune online!

8. Nashville Cats

When The Lovin’ Spoonful recorded “Nashville Cats” in 1966, they were probably using the Beatnik meaning of the word, which was pretty much talking about Hipsters or Daddy-O’s. You’ve gotta admit, though, that those Cool Cats had nothing on the super cool cats we all know and love.

To sum it all up

There and hundreds of other songs we could have picked, but just didn’t have room for. Let us know if you’d like to see part two of this article. Meow!
